While it was the heavy bombers of the RAF that gained much of the fame for the devastation of the German communication lines in France before D-Day, it was in fact the medium bombers of the 2nd Tactical Air Force that did much of the work. Aircraft like the B-25 Mitchell were able to accurately attack targets such as marshalling yards, railway lines and bridges. One of the units engaged in these operations was 226 Squadron. They had been to France before, flying Fairey Battles in 1940, but they now flew the B-25 from RAF Hartford Bridge and were a powerful force in the skies over occupied Europe. The B-25 proved to be a capable medium bomber throughout the latter part of the war, being both reliable and tough.

The B-25 Mitchell was a twin-engine medium bomber manufactured by North American Aviation and used by the United States and Allied air forces during World War II. It was named in honor of General Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of U.S. military aviation. First flown on August 19, 1940, the B-25 entered operational service in 1941. Nearly 10,000 B-25s were built in numerous variants.
