Product description

For the first time fighter pilots of 19 and 65 Squadron (RAF) stationed at RAF Peterhead in Scotland in the spring of 1945 tell about their war time service. Their task was to escort Mosquito and Beaufighter aorcraft to Norway where shipping was attacked. With their single engined P-51 Mustangs the pilots flew low above the wave tops of the North Sea to avoid being detected by German radar. Over Norway German fighters often counterattacked. On the return it was vital to avoid flying into a hill in Scotland if the weather was bad. Many were afraid. In their spare time the pilots relaxed with games, pub calls, parties and dancing. The book also describes personalities in the fighter squadrons, humerous episodes, the cause behind some aircraft accidents and the relationship with the Mosquito and Beaufighter units which they escorted. The Commanding Officers of both fighter units at RAF Peterhead in the spring of 1945 contributed to this book before they died: Squadron Leader Peter Joseph Hearne, 19 Squadron, and Squadron Leader John "Johnnie" Warford Foster, 65 Squadron.

The book in A4 size, contains 136 pages, around 100 photos of which many have never been published before. 100 % English text and 100 % Norwegian text. Presentation of the Mustang veterans (2006) and RAF Peterhead revisited (2007). Index.
