The Lockheed F-35 is an advanced stealth fifth generation fighter combining speed and superb
agility. There are three variants; F-35A, B and C. The F-35A CTOL (Conventional Take Off and
Landing) and has four internal weapons stations in two weapons bays plus three optional
external weapons stations. The F-35B STOVL (Short Take Off Vertical Landing) variant while the
F-35C is a CV (Carrier Variant). The F-35 will replace the USAF A-10 and F-16, the F/A-18 for the
USN and the F/A-18 and AV-8B Harrier for the USMC.
Lockheed F-35A AF-1 is the first F-35 to be manufactured using the moving assembly line that
travels at a rate of 50 inches per hour. AF-1 or AF-01 as some label it; is the first CTOL F-35 and
completed its maiden flight on November 14, 2009. This flight marked the 130th flight in the F-35
program and the fourth F-35 for flight operations. The aircraft was sent to the Final Finishes
Facility and on April 13, 2010 it was rolled out wearing a hand-paint fin flash on the vertical
stabilizers. On May 17, 2010 AF01 flew to Edwards AFB for extensive testing.
