Product description

Challenge
In a country that despite its glorious history is not known, ironically, for its historical memory and for saving its long historical heritage, this book comes to fight the oblivion that inevitably comes with time, as well as to remind to all of us the value of the winged veterans from steel of the Hellenic Air Force (HAF).

FIGHTING THE LETHE, HAF out of service aircraft 2010-2011 is the crowing of 22 years of research, combined with 18 months of photos gathering by the author, Themistoklis A. Vranas, a widely recognized expert in the field of researching and documenting the history of out of service aircraft of HAF.

The Attainment
FIGHTING THE LETHE, HAF out of service aircraft 2010-2011 starts with HAF Combat Wings, followed by Combat Groups and then the remaining HAF Units. After these are HAF aircraft outside HAF Units in Greece and abroad.

At each HAF Unit presentation, the name of the Unit is used as headline, together with the date (month/year) of the author/contributors' visit, both in Greek and English language.

During these visits aircraft that never served with the HAF were also photographed, for example museum exhibits or aircraft belonging to Army Aviation. These are included in the Unit presentation but they are excluded from the mass type lists at the beginning of the book. Aircraft that were used as source of spare parts or instructional airframes by the HAF are treated like any other non-operational HAF aircraft.

Aircraft are recorded by subtype, and all available information for each aircraft is recorded in four columns: In the first column, the tail number is quoted (in many cases the fuselage number!). In the second column, the serial number used by previous users/owners is quoted. In this case USAF serial number appears first, followed by the serial numbers of subsequent users (German Air Force, Royal Netherlands Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, and Imperial Iranian Air Force). In the third column, the construction number is written, while in the fourth column the reader will find hard to get remarks about movements of the aircraft from the day its operational use was terminated, and information about its treatment by HAF.

The photographic presentation of the aircraft follows just after the text and the aircraft board of each Unit. As the aircraft presentation per Unit makes it difficult for the reader to realize how many and which aircraft of each type are currently surviving, in the first pages of the book there are concentrated type lists for solving that problem. The type lists include only s/n and location, allowing the reader to find more info for a specific aircraft by just turning to the page of the corresponding Unit. It is of worth to mention that all and every possible effort was exerted to make the data and photos correct as of October 2011.

The Result
FIGHTING THE LETHE, HAF out of service aircraft 2010-2011 proves the existence of 667 HAF veterans that either served within HAF or were used, right from the start, as source of parts for other aircraft of the same type. Particularly positive impression causes the fact that 253 of these veterans are displayed inside or outside HAF Units, inside Greece or overseas!

FIGHTING THE LETHE, HAF out of service aircraft 2010-2011 is the first ever study of its kind covering Hellenic Air Force aircraft. At the same time, it claims to be probably the most completed presentation of the out of service aircraft of any air force around the world, being the first book to combine high quality (and full colour) photographic recording of each such airframe with a detailed report of each aircraft path after its retirement from active duty, achieving thus a feat without any international precedent for books of this specialized category!
