The city of Frankfurt has boasted an airport since 1924 when Rebstock airfield was opened, but by 1934 it had reached capacity limitation.
In 1936 the Flug-und Luftschiffhafen Rhein-Main was opened. From there you could book a flight to Rio de Janeiro on a scheduled flight by either the Graf Zeppelin or Hindenburg airships.
Today Frankfurt has become the financial centre of Germany and a vital hub for European and International air traffic. In 1999 the airport handled nearly 46 million passengers, 439,093 aircraft movements and 1,428,127 tonnes of freight. 110 airlines can fly you to 290 destinations in 109 countries.
The airport has wonderful viewing facilities for aviation enthusiasts and a superb collection of classic aeroplanes
