Frankfurt airport - with more than 21,600 flights in 1988 and 480,000 in 2012, this airport is in the highest risk category for the fire and rescue service. Here fire engines must be capable of reaching the end of every landing and take-off runway in less than three minutes. Five of these special major airport fire engines (= GFLF) stand ready for use, each one costing over two million DM when it was bought in the 1980s. The Simba was developed specifically to meet the requirements of Frankfurt Airport and despite its enormous 45 tonne weight is anything but cumbersome. It is driven by a 31.6 litre V8 Diesel engine that delivers 1250 hp (920 kW). This enables the giant to accelerate from its stand to 80 km/h in 25 seconds; top speed 125 km/h. The extinguishing water is stored in 11,600 litre tanks, in addition to which there are 2 x 600 litres foam and 2000 kg dry extinguisher available. To facilitate the accuracy of the firefighting a roof monitor is used that aims the foam/water cannon on the roof, which delivers 9000 litres of foam/water mixture per minute and has a range of 75 meters. Two other cannon are stationed behind a shield beneath the front windscreen. They have a capacity of 1,500 litres foam per minute at a range of 60 metres and 50 metres for a powder extinguisher at 50 kg per second. This capacity comes from 8-cylinder pump engines with a capacity of 280 hp (206 kW) each. The Simba is designed for a three-man crew who daily has to demonstrate their speed and performance with this vehicle, in readiness to rescue people and property.
