In July 1978 the European manufacturer Airbus began work on their second aircraft, the
A310. It would be a medium-to long-range wide-body airliner based on the Airbus larger
first aircraft the A300. The first flight of the A310 took place on April 3, 1982 with the first
service flight in April 1983 with Lufthansa. In 1985 the A310-300 production began as a
longer range version of the A310-200 and is capable of carrying an additional 15,430
pounds of fuel in its tail-plane. The last A310 was delivered in June 1998.
Airbus A310-203 c/n 283 made its first flight on October 1, 1983 wearing the Air Bus
registration F-WZEA. On January 13, 1984 the aircraft was delivered to KLM Royal Dutch
Airlines as PH-AGE “Jan Steen”. The aircraft served with KLM until April 1, 1992 when it
was delivered to MEA – Middle East Airlines and retained the PH-AGE. On October 23,
1997 PH-AGE was sold to FedEx as N443FE. On March 30, 1998 the aircraft was sent for
conversion to an A310-203F and joined the active fleet in July 1998.
