The first flight of the Hawker Fury I took place in March 1931. Because of the Great Depression
and the high cost of the Fury only 118 were produced for the RAF. It was the first RAF
operational aircraft to exceed 200 mph in level flight. In May 1931 No. 43 Squadron was the first
to receive the new aircraft. Starting in 1936 five RAF squadrons received the new improved Fury
II. Seven foreign air forces ordered the Fury II. In 1939 the RAF Furys were replaced by
Gladiators and Hurricanes.
Hawker Fury Mk. I "K5674" was built as c/n 41H-67550 and delivered to 2 ASU (Armament
Support Unit) Cardington on November 20, 1935. On June 2, 1936 K5674 was delivered to 43
Squadron at Tangmere and became the personal aircraft of F/O F. Rosier from December 9,
1936 until February 22, 1939. It became the property of the South Africa AF in late 1940 as serial
215. In 1941 it was written off, discovered in a farm field in 2003, restored and flies once again.
