The History of the Dassault Rafale and Its Maiden Flight

The Dassault Rafale is a French twin-engine, multirole fighter aircraft developed by Dassault Aviation for air-to-air combat, ground attack missions, reconnaissance and nuclear deterrence. The program began in the 1970s and 80s, when France decided to develop its own independent combat aircraft. On July 4, 1986, the Rafale A made its maiden flight in Istres, in southern France. During the hour-long flight, test pilot Guy Mitaux-Maurouard reached a speed of Mach 1.3 and an altitude of 11,000 meters, confirming the project's immense potential.

This successful debut marked the beginning of the story of one of the world's most advanced fighter jets. Today, the Rafale serves in both the French Air Force and Navy, and its export successes have made it a symbol of French aerospace technology.
