Vreeburg A2M (LVA)

In 1919 the Dutch Military Aviation Department (LVA) showed a twin-engine bomber at the E.L.T.A. exhibition in Amsterdam (1 August to 14 September 1919), which had been built in Soesterberg. This was the Vreeburg A2M, a project that had been presented in mid-1917. The aircraft was built by the Technical Department (TD) of the LVA in addition to the normal work. The A2M was designed by ing. H.A. Vreeburg, head of the TD. It was basically a conversion of a two-seater Sopwith 1½ Strutter, LA33 (ex-9396), which had been acquired in February 1917. As A2M it was a three-seater twin-engine aircraft with 80 hp Thulin A rotary engines, which were later replaced by 120 hp Le Rhone rotary engines, placed between the upper and lower wings. The wing was extended and extra wing struts supported the two engine nacelles. Because the engine was removed at the front of the fuselage, an observer's position could be built in the nose. After some construction problems the aircraft could finally make its first flight with Lt. W.C.J. Versteegh at the controls on February 10, 1919. At the E.L.T.A. the A2M was prominently displayed, fully equipped and armed with bombs under the wings. After that nothing was heard of the Vreeburg A2M ever again.... The A2M had a wooden construction covered with canvas. Situatyed in the nose was an observer with a Lewis machine gun and a camera, the pilot sat between the wings and behind the wing was a second observer with a Lewis machine gun on a Halberstad MG ring, a radio and the controls for the bomb load. Grilles were mounted next to the nose to protect the observer from the propellers. The lower wing had air brakes, which were operated by a handwheel in the pilot's cockpit. The tailplane was adjustable.
