Published in connection with the 75th anniversary of the Danish Air Force, on October 1, 2025
Most people remember the Danish Air Force's S-61 rescue helicopters, which for almost half a century up to 2010 rescued over 7,000 people in distress – but which helicopters came before the S-61 and formed the first steps in building up today's highly efficient SAR service, now carried out by EH101 Merlin helicopters?
And everyone has heard of our Hercules transport aircraft's worldwide missions with both military and civilian tasks – but which transport aircraft came before the C-130 Hercules, when you look back at the history of the Danish Armed Forces since World War II?
The answers can be found in this book, which covers all types of support aircraft – i.e. all flying equipment except fighter aircraft – which have served the Air Force, Army and Navy from 1945 to the present day.
The book describes these aircraft – for the first time collected in one volume – with text, specifications, historical photos and not least Ole Rossel's unique profile drawings, which reproduce in detail the appearance of these aircraft in the various stages of their service. The drawings are based on, among other things, the Armed Forces' photo archives, photos from other aviation enthusiasts and the author's own measurements and thorough photography of support aircraft since 1970.
Ole Rossel (born 1946) is a retired architect MAA and industrial designer. He has a lifelong commitment to the history of Danish military aviation, with three books now behind him.
