The South African Airways Museum Society is a non-profit volunteer organisation run by highly motivated passionate enthusiasts dedicated to the preservation of civil aviation history in South Africa. As you will see from the scenes in this video their efforts were rewarded when, on 5 March 2004, Boeing 747-244B ZS-SAN "Lebombo" landed at Rand Airport to be preserved for future generations. Lebombo was registered to SAA in July 1971 and was rolled out on 24 August. Her first flight was 30 September 1971. She was delivered to SAA on 22 October 1971. "Lebombo" operated the first SAA 747 service on 10 December 1971 flying Johannesburg-Luanda-London. Her last service with SAA was 24 November 2003. The flight number was SA 3061 and the route Lagos-Johannesburg. After 31 years, 11 months and 14 days in service with SAA the aircraft was retired and donated to The South African Airways Museum Society. At four minutes past eight, South African time, on an overcast and dull Friday morning 5 March 2004, the retired South African Airways Boeing 747-244, ZS-SAN, "Lebombo" touched down at Rand Airport, Germiston, just outside Johannesburg. Lebombo is utilised to her fullest extent for aviation awareness programmes as well as for fund raising for the SAA Museum Society. The aircraft is available for school tours, small corporate related functions such as board meetings and conferences, product launches, award ceremonies and Classic Car and Motorcycle gatherings. Museum members conduct informative and entertaining tours of Lebombo which last approximately 45 minutes. This video contains 3 scenes: 1) Lebombo display at Rand Airport air show Sunday 4 May 2003 2) Practice approach to Rand Airport with B747-344 ZS-SAT Thursday 27 November 2003 3) Lebombo landing at Rand Airport Friday 5 March 2004 Produced by Leon Botha in association with The South African Airways Museum Society.
