The Northrop Alpha 4 was a reasonably large, single engine monoplane aircraft, used for limited passenger and fast mail transport. Introduced in 1931, only seventeen of this type were ever built, and a number of these were converted into the 4-A variant, Stearman, used simply for cargo transport. The majority of these machines were operated by Transcontinental and Western Air (TWA), state-hopping with mail and perishable goods
