Product description

Examines the unit and squadron-level markings applied to the Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck from the first flights of the prototypes in 1950 to the last flights by the two retirement specials in 1982. Covers Mk.1 through Mk.5C/D and all units/squadrons.

Intended to be as complete a collection as possible of the various markings that gave the aircraft its unit or squadron identities and how those markings evolved over time.  Apart from their identification function, these unit-level markings would play a significant role in building the camaraderie and esprit de corps within the individual units and gave visual form to a sense of belonging and competiveness to achieve ever higher standards of excellence and preparedness between squadrons. All during that period of time during the Cold War when the tensions and the stakes could be no higher.

It has now been over 30 years since a major book has been published on the venerable Clunk and with 2017 marking the 65th anniversary of its operational introduction with No.3 All-Weather(Fighter) Operational Training Unit at RCAF Station North Bay on 22 July 1952, the choice of the CF-100 as the topic for this first volume of Canadian Cold Warriors seemed quite fitting.

Packed with 130+ photographs and more than 300 full-colour drawings including:

100+ profile drawings, 15+ plan view drawings, 70+ nose landing gear doors, 75+ unit crest and badge designs and 45+ examples of "fleet-wide" graphics.

Forewords provided by Colonel (Retd) Jon Ambler OMM CD and Patrick Martin.

Afterword provided by Captain Doug Newman, the Wing Heritage Officer at 22 Wing CFB North Bay.
