The final curtain fell on December 28, 1999: with the delivery of the "Spirit of Long Beach" the last MD-80 built left the McDonnell Douglas plant 20 years ago. Starting back in 1979, the California-based manufacturer had produced no less than 1,191 aircraft of the MD-80 family for airline around the world.
