This is a 172 page limited edition hardcover deluxe book about the Eagles & Strike Eagles of the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath. Author is Michael Stephan, an airline pilot who worked on the book for several years (and flew with a Strike Eagle).
The book is about the F15 Eagles of the 3 squadrons of the 48th FW: 492 FS, 493 FS, 494 FS and the 56 & 57 Rescue Squadrons. It is filled with interviews and anecdotes from the commanders and pilots of the various units, but also highlights the history of the Wing and RAF Lakenheath.
Many of the 48th Fighter Wing commanders introduce themselves and the workings of the units. With the F-15Cs of the 493rd FS having been retired in 2022, the F-35A have taken over their role in the 495th FS and since April 2023 the 493rd FS. This book also offers a unique view of the 56th and 57th Rescue Squadrons that were based at RAF Lakenheath before they were deployed to
Aviano Air Base. The final chapter offers a look at the future of the 48th, with 2 squadrons flying the Strike Eagle and 2 squadrons operating the F-35A Lightning II
The Madhatters, the Panthers and the Grimreapers: each of these units are shown in separate and extensive chapters.
Author Michael Stephan, an airline pilot by profession, had the opportunity to fly a training mission in an F-15E of the 492 Fighter Wing.
