Product description
  • Nord-Aviation was created in January 1958 by changing the name of the Société Nationale des Constructions Aéronautiques du Nord (SNCAN). Its design office is based in Châtillon (Seine) and its factories at the airport of Bourges (Cher) and Méaulte (Somme).
After producing the Nord 2501 Noratlas until February 1962 and missiles, the State entrusted it with the development of the Max-Holste Super Broussard which would become the Nord 262, a pressurized turbine aircraft largely for civilian use in which Nord-Aviation had no experience.
The target market is that of local American companies, which have nearly 200 DC-3s to replace and 18 of them will take 74 options as the N-262 seems well suited to their needs.
To secure firm foreign orders, a French launch customer is needed, and Air Inter will be forced into this role by the State, even though it prefers a faster and more profitable aircraft like the Potez 840 or the Dassault Communauté A-1. The company will demand a capital increase and a loan before finally agreeing to order four N-262s on June 19, 1964.
This initial French order unlocked the order from the American company Lake Central for 8 aircraft plus 14 options on June 29, 1964. It would order 4 additional aircraft in April 1966 but due to several incidents of Bastan turbines, due as much to initial fragilities as to non-compliance with instructions for use, maintenance, unsuitable flight profiles and deficiencies in after-sales service, Lake Central would abandon its 10 remaining options and cancel its sales representation of the N-262 in the USA, causing the cancellation of the 62 options taken by the other American regional companies.
This failed entry into the American market will cause mistrust among airlines and the state will have to buy 55 of the 110 unsold aircraft produced by the Navy, the Air Force, the Flight Test Center and the Aeronautical Training Service.
In addition, production suffered a four-year break in the chain at the end of 1972 with machine no. 99, which was only reactivated at the beginning of 1977 to complete nos. 100 to 110.
The new N-262 had only 27 customers, but thanks to improved reliability, it found 67 used ones.
After several unsuccessful attempts at revival, the Franco-Italian twin-engine ATR-42 took over in 1981.
