The Heinkel He 46 was designed in 1931 for close reconnaissance and ground-based cooperation missions. It served as a light bomber, reconnaissance, trainer and was still used by night-bombing units in 1943. The export version of the He 46C-1 for Bulgaria, designated the 46eBu, was equipped with a 735hp Siddeley Panther engine and a NACA cowling. It was armed with a single MG17 machine gun. 18 were built, but were not delivered to Bulgaria and were instead used as Luftwaffe trainers.
