WWII U.S. airfield hand made car
After the war, cheap surplus P-38’s drop tanks were 'recycled' by vets who used them to build ‘Drop Tank Racers’. Due to the drop tanks excellent aerodynamics, in the post-war years these homemade vehicles broke numerous land speed records. Because these cars raced in salt flats (the hard, flat surface of dried prehistoric salt lakes) they became known as ‘Lakesters’.
