Albatros D.II Late

he Albatros D.II was a German fighter aircraft developed during the First World War as an improved successor to the Albatros D.I. Designers lowered the upper wing and moved it closer to the fuselage to give the pilot a clearer field of view. The machine was powered by a six-cylinder, water-cooled Mercedes D.III engine delivering about 160 horsepower and carried two synchronized 7.92 mm lMG 08 machine guns.

In August 1916, an initial order for 100 units was placed, and the type soon began front-line service. With its arrival, Germany organized its first specialized fighter squadrons, increasing combat effectiveness in the air—similar formations had already been used by the French and British since 1915. In September 1916, Oswald Boelcke, one of Germany’s leading aces, was appointed to lead Jagdstaffel 2 (Jasta 2). Among the squadron’s pilots were Manfred von Richthofen, Erwin Böhme, and Hans Reimann. During September, Boelcke scored 11 victories—initially flying a Fokker D.III and, from 17 September onward, an Albatros D.II.
