The Story Behind “Grandfather’s Command” (太公令)
The name “Grandfather’s Command” traces back to Chinese ace pilot Hsu Hua-chiang (徐華江) during World War II.
Inspired by the Chinese classical novel Investiture of the Gods, Hsu named his aircraft after Jiang Ziya (姜子牙 / Jiang Taigong), the legendary military strategist revered in Chinese culture.
The original Chinese name 「太公令」 (Taigong Ling) can be understood as “The Command of the Grand Strategist.” During the war, American Flying Tigers personnel translated it functionally as “Grandfather’s Command.”
The original aircraft, a Curtiss P-40N, featured:
  • Bright yellow 「太公令」 markings on both fuselage sides
  • The iconic Flying Tigers shark mouth nose art
  • The grinning skull insignia of the 7th Fighter Squadron, 3rd Fighter Group, Chinese-American Composite Wing
Flown by distinguished Chinese aces including Hsu Hua-chiang and Wang Kuang-fu (王光復), the aircraft achieved multiple victories against Japanese forces and became known as a remarkably fortunate fighter that survived numerous intense dogfights.
This special edition pays tribute to that legendary wartime aircraft and its historical legacy.
