A brief history of the aircraft type and the airline is supplied with each model.
In response to the Douglas DC-4 Lockheed developed the Constellation. As more powerful
engines were developed the Constellation was stretched 21 feet and improvements made
resulting in the L-1049G Super Constellation. The development of the L-1049G improved range
with the addition of wing-tip tanks. The more powerful engines made it necessary to use large
propellers that required the aircraft to sit quite high off the ground. A triple tail was developed
because the size of a single tail would have been too large to fit in any hangar.
Formed in 1925 as Pitcairn Aviation the name was changed to Eastern Air Transport in January
1930. On April 1934 the name was once again changed, this time to Eastern Air Lines and
eventually Eastern Airlines. Eastern Airlines was the launch customer for the Lockheed L-1049
Super Constellation with 14 aircraft. Later 16 L-1049C and 16 L-1049Gs were added to the fleet.
N6232G was c/n 4655 and delivered in September 1956 and operated with the Eastern fleet
number 232 until February 1968. The aircraft was scrapped at Fox Field, California.
