Charles A. Lindbergh ordered an aircraft from Ryan Airlines (a small company in San Diego). At the end of February 1927, Chief Engineer Donald A. Hall and W. Hawley Bowlus began work on a prototype. Two months later, the Ryan NYP (for "New York to Paris") was ready. Named "Spirit of St Louis" in homage to the financiers of St Louis who supported the project, it began a series of tests and then flew to New York between May 10 and 12, setting a new transcontinental record. On the morning of May 20, 1927, C.A Lindbergh took off from New York, and after thirty-three hours, thirty minutes, he landed at Le Bourget after a crossing of 5810 kms, at an average speed of 173 km / h. The Ryan NYP was derived directly from the classic N-2 mail machine and its engine was a 230 hp Wright Whirlwind nine-cylinder radial.
