Inspired by the most efficient fighter pilot of World War I, Manfred von Richthofen AKA The Red Baron, who gained widespread fame from his scarlet-coloured liveries, audacious flying style and ruthless effectiveness.
His infamous moniker is a constant reminder of his tactical genius and flying skills, and that still echoes throughout history, and has been depicted in countless books, films, songs, comic strips and television programs.
The long list of kills that made him the original Ace of Aces, the Baron's legend only grew after he took command of a German fighter wing known as the Flying Circus. In the summer of 1917 he was outfitted with the Fokker Dr.1 triplane, the distinctive, three-winged machine that would become Richthofen's most famous aircraft.
After numerous close calls, his cockpit career was cut short in April 1918. The records tell us that he was shot down in a dogfight against an Allied squadron at Vaux-sur-Somme, France.
