Your reliable Aircraft Modelling Source since 1989
Not the best of f16 kits but interesting decals.
This F-16A looks just like the first YF-16 that manufacturer General Dynamics used to recruit customers for this aircraft worldwide in the mid-1970s. The prototypes, designated YF-16A, flew in this colourful red, white and blue colours
The 80229 is of course not a real YF-16A. It is an old, discarded F-16A from the Royal Netherlands Air Force. It was built by Fokker at Schiphol and was delivered to the Dutch Air Force on August 22, 1980 as J-229. After grounded it was put into use as an instruction airframe at Volkel Air Force base on April 28, 1990.
To celebrate in 2004 that the F-16 had been in service for a quarter of a century, it was decided to repaint the J-229 as an YF-16A with registration 80229. The colourscheme was not completely authentic, the YF-16A obviously had no Royal Netherlands Air Force text on the fuselage.
It has remained in these colours at Volkel ever since. In 2019, the Royal Netherlands Air Force celebrated the 40th anniversary of the F-16 and during the 2019 Air Force Open Days at Volkel, the old J-229 was once again brought out and exhibited to the public.'
