The first flight of the prototype Bü 131 (D-3150) was carried out on 27 May 1934 with pilot Joachim von Köppen. The aircraft was powered by an in-line four-cylinder Hirth HM 60 R engine with an output of 59 kW. As early as 1934, serial production of the Bü 131 A version began, whose main customer was the Deutscher Luftsportverband. In 1936, the Bü 131 B type series was launched, which was distinguished by the built-in Hirth HM 504 A-2 engine with a power of 77 kW.
