According to SAC:

In service photos show the exposed oleo of the nose gear in a nearly collapsed position to an extended position even more than the kit gear. This, of course, show the aircraft in several profile positions. The diameter of  the strut is large enough to cut the oleo where it joins the upper strut. It can then be cut down to the length the modeler wishes. Next, drill the center of the upper and lower portions to accept a piece of metal rod. After the “peg” is inserted the parts can be rejoined with thick set CA.
