Conceived 30 years ago, the Panavia Tornado was Europe's first true multi-role combat jet. Since entering front-line service in 1982, it has proved itself one of the outstanding achievements of modern aeronautical engineering. This was underlined by its performance in the low and medium level strike roles during the Gulf War. Development of the Tornado F3 long-range interceptor fighter followed. 1998 saw the GR4 coming into service with the RAF as production of new IDS aircraft for Saudi Arabia ended. There is coverage of the Tornado in action in the Gulf, new weapons and operations in Kosovo. This is the most comprehensive review of the highlights of the MRCA story. There are personal accounts from pilots and informed comment from key people involved in its development. Appendices detail every Tornado built together with their present status.
